Interview with Alfredo Ezquerra Sánchez

Alfredo, you are originally from Spain. What has brought you to London?

There were many things that brought me here.

I wanted to have a different experience in my life, have a new adventure to push my comfort zone.

Also the economic crisis in Spain was part of the decision, but basically I wanted to show myself I could live in a completely new environment.

In your work you focus on urban landscape motives and iconic symbolism. What has let you develop your artistic profile around these areas?

I have spent hundreds of hours walking around London.

I have visited the same places many times, day and night, in different seasons, to find the right moment for my camera.

You shoot both in color and black and white. How do you employ both forms? And do you prefer one to the other?

I always try to bring the best in each picture, sometimes it is in the colour and other times it is in black and white but my best pictures come in black and white.

They bring drama to the picture.

Looking at your images it’s striking your use of geometry and forms. Can you please elaborate a little bit on the aesthetics inherent in your images?

“I have developed a technical base in forms, geometry, angles and lines.”

I’m originally a mechanical engineer so I think in the back of my mind I have developed a technical base in forms, geometry, angles and lines.

Plus add passion, heart, sensitivity and emotions, there you are, the special cocktail of my pictures.

In today’s society image making has become accessible to almost everybody. How does that affect you as a professional photographer who makes a living out of taking pictures?

If you want to be professional you have to show something different and unique.

If you do this you don’t have to be worry about anything else.

Connecting to the previous question: What is it in your opinion a single photograph or a series needs in order to stand out and get noticed? Especially keeping in mind the over abundance of photographic imagery these days.

Your mind has to be ready to catch that instant frame that no one else will.

As a part of this you have to play with lights and your camera to make it show as you thought in your mind.

Susan Sontag once said “The camera makes everyone a tourist in other people’s reality, and eventually in one’s own”. How has photography changed the way you look at the world and what have you learned about yourself?

“I know I can keep the image for the rest of my life.”

Photography has changed the way I see my life.

I always look for that place, object or situation that I like to capture. Then, I know I can keep the image for the rest of my life.

A camera is the tool that helps me expressing all of my feelings and the way I see my life.

Every photographer is going through different stages in his formation. Which “landmarks” do you recall that have marked you and brought you to the place where you are today as a photographer?

Living in London has changed my whole life. I find this city very interesting to take photographs.

It has opened my mind and I can see things differently through my camera nowadays.

Last but not least, let’s switch roles: Which question would you have liked to be asked in this interview about your work that I didn’t ask? Please feel free to add it – as well as the answer.

Q: What are you planning in the future as a photographer?

“The photography market is very competitive.”

A: I want to exist as a well-known photographer. I would like to run my own business and cooperate with the interior designers. Not only in UK with interior designers such as David Linley but also in other countries perhaps United States, Dubai etc.

I would like to be better and better as I am aware of the fact that the photography market is very competitive.

But I am a very hard-working person and follow my dreams so I know one day I will be very successful.
